Edit ChatGPT Markdown output on your Mac

ChatGPT gives you a plan, a note or a procedure in Markdown. Inside the chat window the text looks clean. Paste it elsewhere and the hashes, stars and table pipes come back. Marko takes that Markdown, shows it formatted on your Mac, and you fix it before keeping it or exporting it.

Save the answer as .md

ChatGPT produces Markdown two ways. The reply shows up in the chat, or the assistant generates a file to download. Either way, you want a .md file sitting on your disk.

  1. If the reply is in the chat, copy it: you get the Markdown source, the one with the hashes and stars.
  2. Open a new document in Marko and paste the text in Source mode. That markup is normal; it carries the formatting.
  3. If ChatGPT generated a .md file, download it, then open it in Marko with File > Open.
  4. Save the document so it has a home on your disk.

Marko does not plug into ChatGPT. There is no connection and no sync. You move the file across yourself, and that file is the only thing that travels between the two tools.

Common slips to catch

A long generated passage often carries small markup defects. In Visual mode they stand out; you then fix them in Source mode, where the markup is visible.

What ChatGPT producesHow to fix it
A table row with one cell too manyThe extra cell does not show; compare the pipe counts in Source mode
A code block left openAdd the three closing backticks in Source mode
A nested list flattened to one levelRe-indent the sub-points to bring back the hierarchy
A skipped heading levelRaise or lower the heading by one step

One tip when you prompt: if you plan to paste the answer by hand, ask ChatGPT to return the document as raw Markdown in a single code block. You copy the block’s contents, strip the three backticks at the start and end, then paste in Source mode. The rest arrives clean.

Ask the assistant for an edit

Marko has a built-in assistant that works on a selection. You pick a paragraph, describe the edit, and it proposes a version. Before it enters the document, you compare the diff and decide. Nothing applies without your approval.

The assistant runs on your own key or a local model; it is not an AI service provided by Marko. You stay in control of what leaves and what comes back.

Keep the .md or export a PDF

Two outputs, depending on the reader. The .md reopens in any editor and can be read again by an AI. The PDF goes to someone who just wants to read.

To keep the source file, save: Marko writes Markdown your colleagues reopen wherever they like. For a read-only version, choose File > Export as PDF…; the document comes out paginated as A4, with its formatting. The PDF is produced on your Mac, with nothing sent out.

Frequently asked questions

Is Marko connected to ChatGPT?

No. Marko has no integration with ChatGPT. You copy the reply or download the .md file, then open it in Marko. The file is what links the two.

Does pasting keep the tables and code?

Yes. Pasted in Source mode, ChatGPT’s Markdown is taken as is. In Visual mode, Marko shows the tables, lists and code from that markup.

Does Marko’s assistant use my ChatGPT account?

No. The assistant runs on your own key or a local model. It is not a service provided by Marko, and it does not borrow your ChatGPT account.

Try it on your own file. Open a .md your AI just wrote, fix it and export it. Marko runs on Apple Silicon Macs, macOS 12 or later.
